My classes are of mixed abilities and ages, with never more than 10 people to a group. We are in a lovely little studio with lots of natural light. I also do two classes a week online for people who find it difficult to get to the studio.

Pilates is a focused form of exercise that helps to strengthen and lengthen the muscles, bringing body awareness and helping to develop a toned physique. Pilates is based on the idea that bad habits or injuries lead to imbalance and weakness in the body. Controlled repetitive movements are used to realign the skeleton and re-educate the body. Breathing techniques, stretching and graceful movements are used to improve body awareness.

Joseph Pilates was the founder of Pilates, early in the 20th century. He developed an interest in fitness due to a sickly childhood. He studied many forms of exercise, including yoga, gymnastics and body building to try and improve his health. Eventually he used his knowledge and understanding to create his own method, which he said could rehabilitate an injured body and strengthen a healthy one.

Pilates can be practised by anyone at any age. The exercises can be adapted to everyone according to strength and flexibility.

Jenny and I have been coming to Sam’s classes for over 20 years. I had a history of back problems associated with a stressful office job, problems which have diminished considerably over the years and which I firmly attribute to my coming to her classes. Changing every week, always fun but always very professional. On her return to England I introduced her to our health club and it wasn’t long before they had to redesign the booking sheets to incorporate, for the first time, a waiting list. That says it all.
